About Almanacs |
Traditionally an almanac was an annual publication in which the positions of the sun, planets and the brightest stars were predicted. Ancient astronomers believed that astronomical phenomena were responsible for changes in the seasons and the resulting data was used by farmers for long range weather forecasting to help identify the best time of year for planting their crops.
However, after the early almanacs were devised, people saw little direct correlation between predicting the movement of the stars and the tides and so almanacs took on more of an astrological role.
